Bake Time:
2 lb. Loaf Bread
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour of your choice

  • 2¼ teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 2 teaspoons low sodium salt
  • 1½ tablespoons butter
1.5 lb. Loaf Bread
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour of your choice
  • 1¾ teaspoons sugar
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¾ cup sourdough starter
  • 1½ teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 1½ teaspoons low sodium Salt
  • 1¼ tablespoons butter
  1. Making good sourdough bread is like putting together a piece of music. It is vitally important that you mix all of the ingredients in the exact order they are described, beginning with the dry ones. The reason for this is mostly to better facilitate the work of the active yeast and allow that fermenting process that gives sourdough its name. For this particular loaf, you will want to use the "dark” setting on your bread machine.
  2. You want to make sure that all the ingredients are mixed together thoroughly, and then you will add the warm milk and the softened butter gradually while the machine is in stirring mode. When the ingredients looked to be sufficiently mixed, you will then want to gradually add the sourdough starter in the same manner. As it is mixing, you may want to add either flour or warm milk to the next year depending on the desired consistency.
  3. When all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, allow the kneading process to continue for at least another 5 to 10 min. After this time has elapsed, you can close the top of the bread maker and begin the actual baking process. Some home bakers allow their sourdough to settle for about a half-hour before beginning the baking process, but this is not required.
  4. When the baking cycle has completed, remove the bread loaf from the machine and place it in a cool area or designated rack. Homemade sourdough bread is fantastic for sandwiches, or as a treat on its own with just a little butter and jam. And no trip to the deli was necessary!
Tips and Suggestions: Sourdough bread has been used in several recipes for stuffing, and if that is what you plan on using your loaf for, some garlic and sage added to the dough along with the other dry ingredients makes for a very savory bread to be used for this purpose.
