Prep Time:
Bake Time:
2 lb. Loaf Recipe
  • 1 ½ cups warm tap water
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1.5 lb. Loaf Recipe
  • 1⅛ cups warm tap water
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¾ tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons active dry yeast
  1. Add water, honey, oil, salt and flour to your bread pan, in this order. Cover the liquid with the flour. Using your finger, make a well into the flour but don’t reach all the way down to the liquid. Sprinkle the yeast onto the well. It is important that the yeast stay dry so that it doesn’t activate before it’s supposed to. Set the machine to the Whole Wheat cycle and press start. It is okay to open the lid of the machine and check the dough. If it is too dry, add water a tablespoon at a time. The machine will knead, rise and bake the bread. When the bread is finished, remove it from the pan. Allow it to cool completely before slicing.
Tips and suggestions: Remember, when adding yeast last; use your fingers to create a well to put the yeast in but that the yeast has to stay dry. The honey in this recipe acts as a natural preservative, so it lasts longer that some machine made bread. Whole wheat flour is high in fiber and minerals, including vitamins E and B. It offers a nutty taste to the recipe. The whole wheat flour also adds a little more sweetness.

this recipe is unclear. i don’t understand step 2. (1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast) – what does that mean?

    • Jon says:

Sorry about that. It was a typo and has been fixed now. Have any of you tried this recipe yet? If so, what did you think?

  2. Bethany says:

Why, in the instruction section, does it say 2. 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast? after the bread is already baked?

  3. Lisa says:

I really want to try this recipe but have a small bread machine and cannot use more than 2 cups of flour. Do you think I can use half of all the ingredients in the 2 lb recipe? Or what would you recommend?

    • Jon says:

That should be fine, Lisa. Just cut the recipe in half. The loaf will be smaller so just make sure it is not over baked. Let us know how it goes as well.
